I hope that most of
you will remember well the conference BigStuff 2007 organized at the Ruhr
(Bochum and Hattingen) in Germany. Preservation of Industrial Heritage was in
the focus of this meeting within the conference sequence ''''''''''''''''BigStuff'''''''''''''''' dealing
generally with the preservation of Large Technology Objects.
The local organizers
of BigStuff 2007 intend to realize a special session on industrial monument
preservation within this 2010 conference. Please find some more details in the
added information sheet.
We like to ask you to participate in this session and
send a contribution within this field. As time is very short till conference
start in October the deadline for submission of proposals is already end of
January. As this proposals should be however just a short announcement about
your intended topic, we hope that still a lot of you will actively
participate.
BigStuff 2010
6th –
8th October 2010,
Imperial War Museum Duxford/UK
Title: “On the conflict and
avoidance of conflict between the display and conservation requirements of Large
Technology Objects within the museum setting
”
Invitation:
Imperial War Museum is delighted to announce Big Stuff 2010,
hosted at IWM Duxford, near Cambridge, on 6th – 8th October 2010.
We now invite
proposals for presentations at this event. The theme of the conference will be
the conflict and avoidance of conflict between the display and conservation
requirements of Large Technology Objects within the museum setting. It is
anticipated that day one will cover conservation, day two will cover display and
day three, to be held on-board HMS Belfast in London, will look towards
generating compromise between the two disciplines.
Conference Information
Rough cost of the conference will be approximately £250 inclusive
of lunches, refreshments, transport to and from Cambridge and HMS Belfast on the
Friday (not finally confirmed)
Call for proposals:
The international programme committee will be looking for case
studies, where conflict arose in a project dealing with display and
conservation, that detail the nature of the conflict, the manner in which the
conflict was handled and resolved and how the conflict could have been
avoided.
Intended Industrial Monument Session:
The local organizers of BigStuff 2007 intend to build a session
dealing specially with industrial monument or site handling also within the 2010
conference. Therefore we ask to submit papers on this topic:
Big industrial monuments require special methods of examination,
action planning and treatment. Here too you will have the conflict between
preservation and presentation. Thus we feel that the conference topic will offer
a big chance to show how to deal with this conflict at all and to present
positive examples of activities in the field of industrial monument
care.
Information for contributors:
Proposals should include the title of the presentation, details of
all contributors and the contact details of the proposer. Proposals should be no
more than 250 words. Successful speakers will be required to submit their full
paper electronically not less than four weeks in advance of the conference for
inclusion, digitally, within the conference delegate pack.
Deadline for sending of proposals: end of January 2010 (as soon as possible)
Submission of proposals:

War Museum, Duxford
